And We're Off...
Our "flight" to Salt Lake City left from the airport at the bright and early hour of 6:00 AM. However, as you may have noticed, the first leg of our "plane" ride was a little unorthodox. We would soon learn that United Airlines no longer flies between Allentown and Newark, so we had to take the bus. This made locating our gate slightly more difficult and I (Matt) was nearly tackled by the security guards while trying to ask for directions. However, we soon found our bearings and were on the way. We then ping-ponged our way across the U.S. from Newark, NJ to Denver, CO and then from Denver to Salt Lake City, Utah. It was a long and tiring day full of security checks, layovers, and airplane food, but we all stuck together. As we flew above the Rocky Mountains and the great salt lake the excitement truly set it.
Soon after arriving, we took a shuttle from the airport to our condo for the week. This condo was provided for us by two close friends of Mrs. Mecham, Megan and Shirley Mills, and it truly was the perfect arrangement for our stay in Salt Lake (A special thanks to them because our trip would not have been the same without their generosity!). It was located in the heart of the city, about a two minute walk from temple square. Margaret, Lauren, and Dr. Moorman-Stahlman slept there throughout the week, but it was also our meeting place every morning. We would gather for breakfast and to pack lunches to take along on our journeys throughout the city. We were all amazed at how beautiful and perfect this condo was.
The rest of our group soon went to the Hilton Hotel to drop off their belongings before dinner. Along the way we saw an Olive Garden and we were all so hungry that before we knew what happened we were eating there. After dinner we needed to buy food for the rest of the week, so nine of us headed off in search of a supermarket. Our first few attempts were unsuccessful, but after some help from the friendly locals we found our way onto the tram. We bought groceries for the entire week and hand carried them all the way back to the center of town. Along the way we saw our first glimpses of Temple Square and were finally ready to play some pipe organs.
